Nokia is set to increase its market share in India after securing a major 4G/5G deal with Vodafone Idea, replacing Chinese vendors Huawei and ZTE in key circles like Chennai and Andhra Pradesh.
As part of the three-year agreement announced on September 22, 2024, Nokia will emerge as Vodafone Idea’s largest supplier, covering regions that generate over 50% of the telecom operator’s revenue. The deal also includes modernizing and expanding Vodafone Idea’s 4G network, along with deploying 5G infrastructure using Nokia’s advanced 5G AirScale portfolio and energy-efficient ReefShark technology.
This $3.6 billion deal, also involving Ericsson and Samsung, marks the first phase of Vodafone Idea’s $6.6 billion capex plan aimed at expanding 4G coverage, launching 5G in key markets, and increasing network capacity. Nokia will supply next-gen 5G base stations, massive MIMO radios, and upgrade VIL’s existing network to be 5G-ready.
Vodafone Idea’s CEO, Akshaya Moondra, emphasized that this partnership with Nokia will enable them to deliver best-in-class 4G and 5G experiences, driving innovation and efficiency across industries.
Nokia has been a long-term partner of Vodafone Idea, supporting its 2G, 3G, and 4G networks, and now plays a pivotal role in the company’s 5G rollout.
