Market Wrap, June 25: NIFTY50 Crosses 25,000; SENSEX Gains 700 Points Amid Global Optimism, Small Caps Lead Surge

The Indian stock market ended higher for the second straight session on Wednesday, June 25, buoyed by positive global cues and easing geopolitical tensions, particularly the pause in hostilities between Iran and Israel.

The S&P BSE Sensex rose 700.40 points (0.85%) to close at 82,755.51, while the NSE Nifty rose 200.40 points (0.80%) to close at 25,244.75—marking a significant close above the 25,000 level.

Broader Market Performance

Small-cap stocks outperformed, with the Nifty Smallcap 100 index rising 1.49% to 18,727.85. Midcaps also advanced, with the Nifty Midcap 100 gaining 0.44% to end at 58,881.7. The upbeat sentiment extended across sectors, particularly IT, media, and consumer durables.

Institutional Activity

Exchange data showed that Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers, offloading equities worth ₹5,266.01 crore on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) remained net buyers, purchasing ₹5,209.60 crore worth of shares.

Global Markets Support Rally

Asian markets were mostly higher amid easing geopolitical tensions. The Hang Seng rose 1.22% to 24,474.67, the Shanghai Composite added 1.02% to 3,455.97, and South Korea’s Kospi added 0.15% to 3,108.25. Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 0.39% to 38,942.07, and Singapore’s Straits Times rose 0.55% to 3,925.98.

On Wall Street, all major indices closed sharply higher, supported by falling oil prices on hopes that crude supply would remain unaffected. The Dow Jones rose 507.24 points (1.19%) to 43,089.02, the S&P 500 added 67.01 points (1.11%) to 6,092.18, and the Nasdaq surged 281.56 points (1.43%) to 19,912.53.

Market Breadth and Volatility

Of the 2,990 stocks traded on the NSE, 2,135 advanced, 776 declined, and 79 remained unchanged, indicating a broad-based rally. Notably, 51 stocks hit a fresh 52-week high, while 23 hit a fresh 52-week low. Meanwhile, 106 stocks touched the upper circuit, and 45 stocks hit the lower circuit.

The India VIX, a measure of market volatility, declined 4.98% to 12.96, signaling a more stable sentiment.

Top NIFTY50 Performers and Laggards

42 stocks in the Nifty50 index gained. Titan was the top gainer, rising 3.66%, followed by Mahindra & Mahindra (2.16%), Grasim Industries (2.13%), Infosys (1.95%), and JSW Steel (1.75%).

On the flip side, Bharat Electronics dropped 2.92%, making it the top laggard, followed by Kotak Mahindra Bank (-1.29%), Eicher Motors (-0.93%), ONGC (-0.87%), and Axis Bank (-0.84%).

Sectoral Overview

All sectoral indices closed with gains except Nifty Private Bank (-0.03%). Nifty Media gained 1.99%, followed by Nifty IT (1.64%), Nifty Consumer Durables (1.43%), Nifty Auto (0.97%), and Nifty FMCG (0.74%).
