US defers China chip tariffs to 2027

The US has locked in a plan to move away from zero tariffs on Chinese semiconductor imports but will only start charging duties from June 23, 2027, giving global chipmakers a long runway to adjust.

Washington says Beijing’s aggressive drive to dominate the chip industry is hurting American companies and has formally labeled those practices as actionable under US trade law.

The delayed start is part of a fragile trade truce, as President Donald Trump also negotiates over Chinese curbs on rare earth exports and possible relaxations on high-end US tech shipments, including select Nvidia AI chips.
